Byfield State School is a small, fairly isolated country school situated 38km north of Yeppoon in the Capricornia region of Central Queensland. With mountains to the immediate west, and coastal dune country to the east, Byfield is only accessible from the south.

The road linking Byfield with Yeppoon ends with the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area to the north and is prohibited to private vehicles.

This isolation has led to a unique local sense of identity that embraces self-sufficiency, ecological sensitiveness, political activity, individuality and independent thinking.

The community attitudes are reflected in the children’s individuality and knowledge and understanding of a broad range of issues.

The local community is widely dispersed over the surrounding area. There is little local employment with most being small acreage farmers or self-employed people.

Community resources are regularly accessed in the delivery of the curriculum. National Parks and Wildlife assist with environmental awareness of flora and fauna in the local area. The Rockhampton Regional Council, Central Queensland University and North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre are some of the resources readily available to the school.

The local cricket club utilises the school grounds for social cricket.
